The organisers are looking for active participants rather than spectators. Participants are expected to contribute insights and concrete problems in at least one of the following areas:

  1. Product lines with challenges in specific usage scenarios
  2. Market insights that point to demand that is not met by current product lines
  3. Ideas for creative reuse of product lines in completely different application domains
  4. Concrete challenges encountered in research or in specific application domains
  5. Complexity challenges and time to market challenges resulting from extreme variability in customer needs
  6. Cost challenges that might be addressed by radically rethinking materials, production techniques, and solution design
  7. New challenges emerging from the analysis of healthcare statistics, environmental and climate data, or economic data
  8. Research prototypes that are challenged in terms of scalability or performance
  9. Sources of more reliable/precise/larger/more diverse data sets on particular topics from particular perspectives
  10. Ideas for innovative solutions that become possible by combining research results and domain expertise from multiple disciplines
  11. New basic research results with unknown potential for innovative product development
  12. Mathematical theories with unknown potential for innovative product development

In order to maximise the time available for hands-on collaboration during the event, the  organisers request participants to submit

  • a 1-paragraph description of their intended contribution in terms of insights, know how, and experiences that may assist others in tackling problems in their organisation or discipline
  • a 1-paragraph description of their intended contribution in terms of a problem (optional)

prior to the conference.

Submitted problem statements and descriptions of domain expertise will significantly speed up the first steps of OpenSpace logistics at the start of the event. It is advisable to describe problems and expertise in simple and accessible language, to enable participants from other disciplines to easily relate to the topic. Essential domain specific jargon and detailed knowledge can be shared during the event.

Problem statements and descriptions of domain expertise will be made available to registered participants prior to the event, so that each participant has ample time to identify potentially interesting problem statements and domain expertise.
