Challenges that Go Beyond the Established Framework of Research in Industry, Government and Academia
The healthcare sector, the primary industries, and related technological innovators are key pillars of New Zealand’s and Australia’s economy. However, in most cases, breakthrough innovation is the result of intensive interdisciplinary research and development, often drawing on insights from disciplines that may lie beyond the focus of attention and the capabilities of a particular organisation, faculty, or government initiative.
Science without innovation neglects opportunities and innovation without science remains shallow and superficial… Diverse knowledge is necessary to solve various problems in the world and to create value in the future, and overcome challenges that go beyond the framework of research in industry, government and academia.

In order to be successful on the world stage, and to address the social, economic, and environmental challenges that lie ahead, New Zealand and Australian researchers and innovators must create and nurture a collaborative culture that encourages diversification, and that bridges organisational boundaries and traditional research silos.
To nurture such a collaborative culture, and to catalyse intensive interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research, S23M, the Colab AUT and the RMIT College of Business have joined forces to host and sponsor the quarterly unConference on Interdisciplinary Innovation and Collaboration. CIIC brings together academic researchers and practitioners working in the private sector, in particular research and development staff, heads of product development, and individual creative technologists, innovators, and entrepreneurs to tackle wicked problems that don’t have an obvious solution.

Join the CIIC community of innovators in open space, and use interdisciplinary collaboration and systems thinking to address challenges such as:
- economic progress
- sustainable supply chains
- effective healthcare
- blending human interaction and automated processes
- energy efficient transport and housing
- the limits of financialised economics
- development of embryonic industries that are not yet playing a significant role
The CIIC community is inviting participants from all disciplines and economic sectors, in particular research and development staff, heads of product development, and individual innovators.
The lists of submitted problem statements and results are growing. We are especially looking forward to progressing the discussion of concrete challenges in the healthcare sector.
